Boudhanath stupa, also known as Boudha stupa, is a large Buddhist stupa located in the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal. It is one of the largest stupas in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stupa is said to have been built in the 5th century AD and is believed to contain relics of the Buddha himself. It is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists from all over the world and is considered to be one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. The stupa is built on a three-level mandala, or diagram of the universe, with a white dome representing the earth, a dome painted in the colors of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) representing the heavens, and a gilded spire at the top representing enlightenment. The stupa is surrounded by a large circular plaza, where pilgrims and visitors can walk clockwise around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and reciting mantras. The plaza is lined with shops and restaurants, and is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The stupa was damaged in the 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal, but was subsequently restored and reopened to the public in 2016. Today, it continues to be an important site of pilgrimage and a center of Buddhist culture and practice in Nepal.
